Paul Erdős, a renowned Hungarian mathematician who passed away in 1996, was widely known both for his immense scientific output and his unconventional lifestyle. He owned nothing — no steady job, no home, no material possessions — and lived off the hospitality of colleagues and friends, dedicating himself entirely to mathematics.
Erdős collaborated with an extraordinary number of fellow mathematicians, generously sharing his brilliant mathematical insights. Having had the chance to work directly with him must have been a unique and valuable experience — so much so that not only his co-authors are noted, but also the co-authors of his co-authors, and so on. To quantify this connection, the concept of the Erdős number was created.
